What Is Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH)?

The prostate is a walnut-sized gland found only in men, located just below the bladder.

After the age of 45, the prostate may begin to enlarge due to hormonal changes.

This condition, known as Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH), is one of the most common urological problems affecting men’s quality of life.

Symptoms of Prostate Enlargement

  • Sensation of incomplete bladder emptying
  • Frequent urination or waking up at night to urinate
  • Weak or interrupted urine flow
  • Straining during urination
  • Burning or difficulty while urinating

How Is Prostate Enlargement Treated?

Treatment options for prostate diseases include medical therapy and surgical interventions.

The choice of treatment depends on:

  • Prostate size
  • Severity of symptoms
  • The patient’s overall health condition

When surgery is required, the primary goal is to protect kidney function and maintain bladder health. Delaying surgery may lead to kidney damage or bladder dysfunction.

Today, minimally invasive and laser-assisted techniques have largely replaced traditional open prostate surgeries, allowing for faster recovery and an earlier return to daily life.

Advantages of Laser Prostate Surgery

  • Very low risk of bleeding
  • Catheter duration is usually less than 24 hours
  • Hospital stay typically does not exceed one day
  • Can be performed under spinal or local anesthesia
  • Safely applicable for patients with heart disease or hypertension
  • Very low risk of urinary incontinence
  • Erectile function is preserved
  • No TUR syndrome or fluid absorption–related complications
  • Safe for patients with pacemakers
  • Low risk even in patients using blood-thinning medications
